A young girl embarks on a dangerous journey to the Arctic in search of kidnapped children and uncovers a world of mystery, magic, and parallel universes.

Lyra Belacqua, a spirited young girl at Jordan College, is entrusted with a mysterious device called an alethiometer, which can reveal truths through its symbolic dials. As she learns to interpret its complex meanings, Lyra becomes aware of a larger, dangerous world beyond her sheltered life. This newfound knowledge propels her into a journey filled with intrigue and peril, as she seeks to understand the alethiometer's connection to a cosmic struggle involving a mysterious substance known as Dust.

This book is set in a universe similar to ours, but different in many ways.
